Dim, faded or muddy colors due to old display unit.
Cause:
A display with dim, faded or muddy colors, indicates an old display unit. Brightness, contrast and focus deteriorate over time.
Solution:
Adjust contrast and brightness and color guns as necessary. Consider replacing monitor.
Do the following, in sequence:
1) Adjust the contrast and brightness:
a) Open a word processor and open a text document (place some text on screen).
b) Locate the brightness and contrast controls on display unit. Try one of the following locations:
1] Underneath the lower front edge of the display.
2] Along the left or right side of the display.
3] Somewhere on the rear panel of the display.
NOTE: For the exact location of the controls, consult the manual that came with the display unit.
c) Identify the brightness control. It often has a light bulb or sun label.
d) Identify the contrast control. It often has a half-shaded circle.
e) Ensure both the brightness and contrast controls are turned up from the minimum setting.
f) Turn the contrast control back and forth until the letters on the screen appear sharp.
g) Turn the brightness control all the way up. Then turn it down until the light-colored glow around the screen's borders merges into the background.
2) Realign color guns via external convergence controls:
NOTE: For the exact location of the controls, consult the manual that came with the display unit.
a) Locate the convergence controls on the display unit. Look in the following locations:
1] Center rear of the display unit.
2] Lower rear of the display unit.
3] Inside hidden panel on front or rear of the display unit.
b) Adjust each knob until the right balance of color appears on the display image.
3) Consider replacing the old display unit with a new one (and a new video card also).
